Success at ‘The Centrals’

The club was well represented at this year’s Central Region Championship held in Chesterfield recently. The club was able to field several seasoned competitors as well as adults and juniors competing for the first time. They all acquitted themselves very well indeed with many winning medals.

The club’s ‘seasoned competitors’ included Zoe Collard, Alan Lea and Rory Cave. They all performed very well in the senior team kata event despite having precious little practice time together as Zoe is currently away at university. In the individual events Zoe competed in the ladies kata and earned a well deserved 4th place, whilst Alan progressed to the final of the junior men’s kumite event via some outstanding scoring techniques most notable of which was a very fast spinning back kick which caught his opponent solidly in the midriff (Alan’s impeccable control undoubtedly prevented his opponent from being pole axed!). Alan eventually took the silver medal losing out in the final to a fighter from Birmingham. Also fighting for the club in the junior men’s kumite was Teddie Henderson who did exceptionally well to join Alan on the winners’ rostrum in 3rd place. In the senior mens’ kumite Kerry Lee fought with great determination in a tough bout but eventually lost out to his more experienced opponent.

Competing for the first time were 15 year olds Rachel Tyler and Becky Cassapi, and both girls got through to the kata finals. In the black belt category Rachel achieved 2nd place and in the coloured belt category Becky achieved a creditable 4th place. Rachel was also a member of the junior kata team alongside Tom Ludlow and Alex Hull who finished in 4th place with a polished performance of the kata Heian Nidan.

The club also fielded two kata teams comprising of fathers and sons! The team of fathers: Anthony Mills, Frank Dennis, and Paul Osborne (I don’t believe that any of them are actually men of the cloth by the way) competed with gusto in the adult team kata event, and were matched only by their own sons, Gregory Mills, Miguel Dennis, and Jonathan Osborne who performed the same kata to an equally high standard in the  children’s team kata event!
