Training Log: Weds 23.04.08

Following the warm up we focussed on  the kick & double punch combinations which are an important aspect of all dan gradings. The size of the dojo at Holme Pierrepont allowed us to practise seven sets: the first two sets were broken down to two counts; the second two sets were performed lightly all the way through; then three sets followed at full speed and power. This model was used to practise all four basic kicks.

Perhaps the most challenging aspect of the exercise was delivering a confident ushiro geri and stopping the kick in the extended position. The important point was to avoid approaching this particular kick any differently to the others. The common flaw is to deliver the back kick tentatively being overly concerned with the possibility of losing balance. Much better to deliver the kick confidently with speed, and to deal with any over rotation or balance issues if and when they occur. After all what’s the worst that could happen?

Jiyu ippon kumite fed into kaeshi jiyu ippon kumite, which fed into jiyu kumite.  Those below black belt used pre-arranged attacks and black belts used unannounced random attacks. Several rounds of jiyu kumite followed. We began with conditional sparring (hands only, stance switches, tempo changes etc) and culminated in free sparring.

Heian Sandan was practiced by those below brown belt, whilst higher grades practised Enpi. The katas were performed at full speed and power to conclude the session.

17 members trained in the session: Paul Osborne, Bob Dainty; Oliver Wood; Chris Webb; Darren Cockburn; Harry Heather; Alex Heather; Ryan Skilton; Caroline Rees; Steve Hull; Teddie Henderson; Jacquie Raikes; Phil Raikes; Caroline Todd; Charlotte Bonardi; Arthur Hall; Rosemary Hall.
