Alan’s report:

The session started with a warm up taken by Rachel Tyler. After we did some of the basic punches and blocks from natural stance. The blocks were then done in in front stance with the higher grades doing more complicated combinations involving counter strikes. These were done to count, lightly, and then full speed and power.

We then practiced the four basic kicks using the back leg and then the higher grades practiced their footwork by kicking with the front leg. The brown and black belts then added a double punch at the beginning and the end of the four kick combination. The kicks were done lightly and full speed and power.

We then partnered off for kumite and the lower grades practiced defending jodan and chudan punches using age uke and soto ude uke and then counter punching gyacku tsuki. The higher grades practiced defending jodan and chudan punches from a freestyle position and varying the counter between the reverse punch, lead arm punch and mawashi geri. The counters were practiced from both sides of the body and then the black belts had to defend the punches whilst moving in the style that would be needed for jiyu ippon kumite.

The white belts then continued to refine Kihon Kata, whilst orange and purple belts did their grading kata. The black belts went through the brown belt kata Empi. To conclude the session the katas were performed in groups allowing the white belts to see the black belts’ expertise when performing kata.

12 members trained in the session: James Gordon; Jonathan Cobb; Noel Henderson; George Coates; Becky Cassapi; Steve Cassapi; Ryan Skilton; Jack Robson; Tom Ludlow; Rachel Tyler; Caroline Todd; Teddie Henderson.
