Rosemary and Arthur Hall have received official recognition of their many years of practice in shotokan karate during a ceremony at the 2008 National Championships on May 18th. They were both presented with a special certificate by Sensei Andy Sherry 8th dan to acknowledge over twenty years’ loyal membership of the KUGB. In fact between them they have closer to fifty years’ experience!
Rosemary and Arthur travel from Newark three times a week to train at the club and they also attend as many regional and national courses as they can. They travelled to Devon at Easter for the residential Torbay spring course and it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re planning to attend the summer course in Lancaster as well!
They were well known faces at Sensei Enoeda’s Crystal Palace courses, and over a period of 16 years they only ever missed one (in fact they are pictured several times in the book “Keinosuke Enoeda: The Tiger of Shotokan Karate” which celebrates Sensei Enoeda’s life).
Do they keep this wealth of knowledge and experience to themselves? Not a bit of it! They always very generously share it with anyone in the club needing guidance on any aspect of their karate practice
In the dojo they always train like dervishes and rise above any limitations, real or perceived, imposed on them by virtue of their more senior years. Likewise they never let issues relating to any health problems get in the way.
Arthur’s only regret after all these years of training?
“I just wish I had started earlier!” he exclaimed.
Our two septuagenarian karate athletes are an inspiration to all.

Congratulations Arthur and Rosemary. You are a wonderful couple; Sensei Enoeda would be very proud of you both.
Best wishes from Rod Butler in London (thats down South somewhere)
