5K5K! 08

The sun was shining down from a cloudless blue sky as we emerged from the dojo. We had performed the first half of the 5k5k challenge: 5 katas at full intensity. We then took our places on the lakeside start line ready to tackle the second half of the challenge: 5 kilometres at a sensible pace!

We must have looked a picture: some in gis, some in lycra, some in running shoes and one in flip flops! But we all made it around the 5k course, some quicker than others, but we all made it. Anthony was the first man home in around 20 mins and Arthur was the last man to return having walked the entire course in under 1 hour. In fact, as Arthur came into view on the far side of the lake, Bob Dainty roared over to him on his 750cc motorcycle like a knight in shining black leather, to offer him a lift. It was like a scene from Easy Rider. But benevolent Bob returned on his lonesome. Arthur was so determined to finish under his own steam that he declined a lift! Either that or he didn’t want to risk ending up in the drink on the back of Bob’s ‘Harley’!

We all pledged an extra £5 each in recognition of Rosemary’s outstanding effort. She completed the course using a trusted technique she borrowed from Baden-Powell. “Scouts’ pace”: 20 paces walking, 20 paces running! Works a treat!

Thanks to all who participated in the event, helped with the organisation, supported on the day, and/or, who donated money. We can all be proud of contributing to an event which we hope will have raised over £1000 to be divided between Spinal Research and the Nottingham Breast Cancer Institute.

What a fabulous evening to have achieved something fabulous!
