KUGB National Youth Championship 2008

Becky Cassapi and Teddie Henderson represented the club at the KUGB National Youth Championship on Saturday 5th July. The shiai jo (competition hall) was full to the rafters with competitors and spectators alike. The standard was good; very good! With a sprinkling of junior internationals in every category the action was fast and furious. Undaunted,  Teddie and Becky rose to the challenge.

Becky fought first. She was up against a 2nd dan. As usual Becky moved extremely well and fired in a volley of shots. Unfortunately her more experienced opponent was fast, and was waiting. Her opponent’s counter punches found their mark to win the match.

Teddy’s bout was action packed. He faced a heavier fighter with good hand speed; a tricky situation. His opponent scored early on requiring Teddie to chase the fight – and chase the fight he did! His maewashi geri? Hit the arms! His ushiro maewashi geri? Skimmed the chin! (Gillette couldn’t have produced a closer shave!). Several explosive exchanges later Teddie was caught with a fast jodan tsuki as he stormed forward yet again.

Two good fights; many lessons learned.

In the kata event both found performing on the mats a little difficult, but they put in strong performances against seasoned opponents nonetheless. Neither proceeded to the second round but there wasn’t much between them and their opponents.

Valuable experience has been gained. Teddie, is a 2nd dan who only recently turned 16yrs of age; Becky, is 16 yrs of age who only recently turned 4th kyu!

Both have time on their side.

Great things come to those who wait.
