Training Log: Fri 01.08.08

We spent time working on kicking techniques initially in the 6.15pm class. The white belts worked on the three phases of the maegeri: the preparation, the delivery, and the recovery. The higher grades worked on the four basic kicks adding the standard double punch finish. We then progressed to partner work. The lower grades worked on their gohon kumite drills, the higher grades worked on a more advanced variation; this required a block and counter to each of five oitsuki attacks. The block for the jodan attacks was nigashe uke, and osae uke for the chudan attacks. The counter each time was kizame tsuki. The biggest challenge appeared to be making sure that the counter was delivered at the correct distance utilising appropriate body dynamics.

In the 7pm session we started with two rounds of skipping and then moved onto jodan gyacku tsuki and chudan gyacku tsuki practise. We began by punching to a compliant opponent who provided a target. Then a prescribed block and counter was used; this was then developed into any block and counter to three separate attacks. The natural progression was into conditional jiyu kumite where only punching attacks were permitted.

The session was concluded with a study of the kata Sochin.
