We used a three shot combination: punch; spear-hand jab; and elbow strike. These three techniques were used to hit the body, throat, and jaw in quick succession. We practised this skill set at low intensity initially to develop a degree of competence. We then upped the tempo using a compliant partner as a static target.
We then worked on the roundhouse kick using a drill where the kick was delivered twice: first with the rear leg and then with the front.
The principles and techniques we worked upon were then used by the defender in a kumite drill. The defender was required to evade the attacker’s jodan reverse punch and deliver an effective pre-determined reposte: the three shot combination or a roundhouse kick – plus elbow strike for good measure!
Seven members trained in the session: Bob Dainty; Frank Dennis; Becky Cassapi; Steve Cassapi; Kerry Lee; Caroline Todd; Rory Cave.
