There was a good turnout in the first session with a significant number of higher grades ‘doing the double’; that is to say training in both sessions. We also had a junior beginner in attendance so there was a broad cross section of grades and ages. The challenge then was to pitch the session so as to provide appropriate and engaging training for all. We started with some kicking practise. The lower grades worked on maegeri to chudan and jodan and the yoko geri kikome. The more advanced students worked on double kicks, front leg, then back leg. The session concluded with Ippon kumite.
“Total Kumite”. That best sums up the second session! We practised a variety of drills using the jieu ippon and kaeshi jiue ippon models. We used prescribed attacks and also random attacks. We worked left and right sides. In this progressive way we built up to an intense period of anything goes action!
