We began by using all four basic kicks in conjunction with combination punches as a platform for refining the fundamentals. However, the lion’s share of the session (which, like always, was over too soon)was spent absorbed in kata!
We broke Heian Godan down move by move and analysed the correct approach. We left no stone unturned! One of the major themes to emerge was the correct approach to the delivery of non-direct techniques. That is to say those techniques with an initial preparation prior to the actual execution of the move. A common flaw is to over-emphasise the preparation point giving it the same priority as the final delivery. Obviously this defies logic; the preparation is the means to the end, not the end in itself. So to take the first move in Heian Godan as an example, the preparation for the uchi uke should be quick and light, the strength comes at the end of the move on impact with the target.
So it is with every non-direct technique: prepare like lightning; deliver like thunder!
