Training Log: Fri 26.09.08

A smaller than usual turnout in both classes, but this was more than made up for by the effort put in by those who were training. Becky Cassapi helped deliver the 6.15pm class. She worked one to one with a junior beginner helping him get to grips with the first principles. The higher grades began by working on a simple routine designed to develop the manoevres required for the first two katas. We emphasised the speed required during the preparatory phase of any non-direct technique and applied this idea to the gedan barais in Kihon; hey presto, razor sharp moves! We also practised the katas Heian Shodan and Heian Godan applying similar principles, and achieved similar results!

The 7pm class benefitted from a visit from Sue Marsden who is a regular at Trent SKC and a very welcome guest. We worked on syncopation: coordinating fists and feet in broken time. We drilled three punching routines. Once everyone achieved an appropriate level of competence with the punches we brought a simple kick into play: ushiro geri! We used three different footwork routines to deliver the kick to a compliant opponent.

These drills culminated in four rounds of kumite: fists only x2; fists plus ushirogeri x2 and finished the class on a high!
