After a challenging aerobic warm up of shuttle runs we ramped up the intensity with some kicking drills taking everybody into the anaerobic zone.
In partner work we delivered maegeris and maewashi geris in an orthodox manner concentrating on the point of impact with both kicks. We then introduced modified versions of the basic forms and practised these variations.
We then ran through the kata Heian Yondan. This kata clearly envisages some close quarter action so that’s what we engaged in. We applied several of the moves found in the kata in an entirely random grapple with an opponent who was attempting to apply them back! We worked on the neck clinch; hiza geri; and enpi uchi; whilst all the time working to further develop our understanding of kuzushi waza – balance breaking techniques.
The session concluded with a rendition of the kata enriched by an alternative insight into its meaning.
10 members trained in the session: Lee Proudlove; Bob Dainty; Ryan Skilton; Oliver Wood; Darren Cockburn; Tom Ludlow; Kerry Lee; Steve Stubbs; Charlotte Bonardi; Caroline Todd
