What a difference a week makes. Last Sunday we had poor weather and a great turnout; this Sunday we had great weather and a poor turnout! As always those training more than filled the dojo with their energy and enthusiasm so numbers didn’t matter. We spent time on each of the three core components: kihon; kata; and kumite. But not necessarily in that order!
In fact we began with kihon and drilled the standard grading combinations. We then moved onto kumite; ippon kumite to be precise. This is an area that tends to unravel in kyu gradings so we attempted to identify some key ‘rules of thumb’. In this way we were able to simplify matters in order to concentrate on delivering effective defences rather than which leg or arm to move!
Our numbers were boosted by the very welcome appearance of Gobe who joined the session at 4 minutes past the hour – unfortunately the hour he was 4 minutes past was 11am not 10 am – poor old Gobe had missed 64 minutes of the action! Anyway I tried to enrich the final 26 minutes of the class for him by concentrating on two of the katas he is refining for his 2nd dan grading next month: Hangetsu and Nijushiho.
The moral of the story? Better late than never.
7 members trained in the session: George Coates; Jonathan Osborne; Paul Osborne; Gregory Mills; Rachel Tyler; Gobe Hobona; Caroline Todd.
