In tonight’s session we examined the full potential of one of our strongest weapons: the punch. We didn’t over elaborate matters, yet we shone a fresh light onto one of our staple techniques: oitsuki. Often dismissed as ineffective, this simple punch is in actual fact the very opposite when applied in a realistic context. We added a few interesting dimensions here and there in this regard. We used collateral techniques to break the opponent’s balance, and to cause a sudden shock factor at the time of the punch.
This was an advanced session revolving around a technique many ‘learnt’ in their first karate class!
A senior martial artist once made the observation that he was trying to learn less, not more. A strange thing to say at first blush. I believe what he meant was that his objective was to hone his defensive weapons down to a few simple yet highly effective measures; he felt that a vast repertoire of moves was not needed and was probably counter-productive.
Food for thought.
9 members trained in the session: Lee Proudlove; Paul Osborne; Bob Dainty; Becky Cassapi; Steve Cassapi; Ryan Skilton; Gobe Hobona; Charlotte Bonardi; Caroline Todd.
