Becky Cassapi returned from the National Students’ Championship on Saturday 21st November the proud recipient of two gleaming silver medals! She took on the KUGB’s finest student karate-ka in her kyu grade category and was a hair’s breadth away from becoming Grand Champion! Ultimately Becky had to settle for runner-up in both disciplines of kata and kumite losing out by the slimest of margins to older competitors from Cambridge University in the finals.
In the black belt category Teddie Henderson was unfortunate to be drawn against the finalists in the very first round; in kata and kumite! In the kata Teddie’s performance of Heian Sandan was sharp and powerful and very little separated him from his opponent who went on to gain a silver medal overall. In the kumite Teddie, who like Becky is still at school, faced a much heavier and older fighter from a major university. Teddie is fearless once he engages an opponent and he unleashed a couple of spectacular kicks which missed by a whisker; his opponent’s whisker – they were that close!
Well done!
