South Notts Shotokan Karate Club

National Students’ Championship

The final competitive outing of 2009 saw two of the club’s U 21 fighters in action at the KUGB National Students’ Championship. The outstanding performance of the day came from Becky Cassapi (pictured above) who returned form the event the proud recipient of two gleaming silver medals! She took on the KUGB’s finest student karate-ka in her grade category and was a hair’s breadth away from becoming Grand Champion! Ultimately Becky had to settle for runner-up in both disciplines of kata and kumite losing out by a very slim margin to older competitors from Cambridge University in the finals.

In the black belt category Teddie Henderson was unfortunate to be drawn against the finalists in the very first round; in both kata and kumite! In the kata Teddie’s performance of Heian Sandan was sharp and powerful and very little separated him from his opponent who went on to gain a silver medal overall. In the kumite Teddie, who like Becky is still at school, faced a much heavier and older fighter from a major university. Teddie is fearless once he engages an opponent and he unleashed a couple of spectacular kicks which missed by a whisker; his opponent’s whisker – they were that close!

The club wishes all the community in Keyworth a happy and peaceful Christmas & New Year. Adults, young people and children (min 8 yrs), wishing to learn karate in 2010 may contact the club secretary on (07811) 819221 for more details.
