On Saturday 13th February the first regional all-grades training session of 2010 took place. The session was well-supported with enthusiasts from across the Midlands in attendance. Sensei Brennan delivered a fantastic session incorporating a sophisticated analysis of each aspect of the class. These sessions are a fabulous opportunity for members to develop their skill levels exponentially and I would encourage everybody to attend as many as possible. They are always held within an hour’s drive of Nottingham, and on regular occasions the club hosts them at Holme Pierrepont!
The 2010 regional kata squad selections and training also took place. Sensei Brennan closely scrutinised various sequences from the Heian katas as well as the more advanced kata Jion. For the forty or so who were fortunate enough to be selected onto this year’s squad it was a priceless ‘master class’ in the technicalities of these staple katas.
Interestingly enough, I have been encouraging members recently to consider the significance of a simple yet fundamental principle of teaching and learning: ‘the aggregate of minutiae’. In other words the importance of the totality of seemingly minor flaws/improvements.
The devil really is in the detail!
