Ashi Barai!

Front leg....
…and back leg!

These two photos taken by Sheri Newbury during our demonstration at the Central Region Champs provide a rather nice breakdown of one of my favourite techniques: ashi barai. Of course the move was always going to work well in this context because it was in the script (well almost!); but I have found it to be one of the most effective and functional techniques which can be adapted to upend all manner of opponents in any context. In fact it happens to work even better when it’s unscripted!

In this example you can see that I have attacked both legs; this requires a penetrating step with the non-sweeping foot, usually set up by throwing a punch with the right, and the opponent’s back leg needs to be within reach. Against a resisting opponent who is fighting back you also need the usual critical ingredients of course: speed, surprise, timing, power and aggression.

The results speak for themselves!
